Sept 12, 2011 – Nigerian Writer Chinua Achebe Battles Rapper 50Cent Over Copyright Issue
Nigerian Icon, Chinua Achebe(the writer of Things Fall Apart) has triumphed after a hot legal battlewith the producers of a movie titled “Things Fall Apart” written and acted by American rapper, Curtis Jackson also known as 50Cent.
Once the movie news came out, the foundation contacted the movie producers to inform them of a violation on a novel written by Dr. Achebe, however they took the allegation lightly and agreed to pay a small 1 Million Dollars to the fictional giant because “50Cent prefer to keep the title,” a source stated.
Nevertheless the legal reps of the Chinua Achebe’s foundation unconditionally informed the producers that; “the novel with the said title was initially produced in 1958 (that is 17 years before rapper 50Cent was born), listed as the mostly read book in modern African literature, and won’t be sold for even 1 Billion Dollars”.
With success out of sight at the settlement desk, the movie producers and the marketing company distributing the movie, Image Entertainment, persuaded 50Cent to switch the title to “All Things Fall Apart” in order to avoid a possible defeat if they have to settle for a different title entirely.
Na wa o, you must know your right and stand for it.
