The Tony Award-winning musical ‘Fela!’ is launching a national tour and is set to open at the Sidney Harman Hall in Washington DC.
The Broadway production received eleven 2010 Tony Award nominations and won the awards for ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Costume Design of a Musical’, and ‘Best Sound Design of a Musical’. Fela! also received a Kennedy Center Honours in the same year.
Earlier in the year, Fela! made its way to Nigeria where the Broadway show was screened. Later in April 2011, the show proper took place at Eko Hotel and Suits.
Fela! will also run at the Shakespeare Theatre Company on October 9.
The show is a biography of Nigerian Afrobeat legend, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. It was co-produced by Jay-Z and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. Fela was played by Sahr Ngaujah.
