It was a night of slam-dunks, surprises and upsets at the 2011 Emmys on Sunday night.
The critically acclaimed ABC comedy Modern Family swept the major awards including best comedy and best writing. The show’s Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen took home trophies for outstanding supporting actor and outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. Many might remember Bowen’s comedic turn on the big screen as “Amy” the awkward wedding planner in this year’s Jumping the Broom.
An evening highlight: a classy, gracious Charlie Sheen. After his “Tiger Blood” and “Adonis DNA” rants, lawsuits and verbal attacks against his former employers earlier this year, the actor wished his old Two and A Half Men castmates "the best" in their upcoming Sheenless season.
Yet another: the legendary Director Martin Scorsese picking up the outstanding directing for a drama series honors for the HBO period gangster saga Boardwalk Empire. In one of the night’s major upsets, Melissa McCarthy took home the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Mike & Molly. McCarthy also enjoyed film success this year as “Megan” in the hit comedy Bridesmaids starring Maya Rudolph.
Rudolph and Akon helped provide the most memorable part of the broadcast. The two helped to liven up the night as guest vocalists in the chaotically hilarious musical medley by The Lonely Island featuring Michael Bolton and Saturday Night Live digital short rapper Andy Samberg.
However, there wasn't much diversity for the night. There were no wins for Taraji P. Henson, Idris Elba orLaurence Fishburne.
