Meet Nigerian Idol Finalists

The 13 final contestants who will go on to compete for the top prize at the ever Nigerian Idol were unveiled at a star- studded cocktail event at the Dream Studio, Omole on Saturday January 29, 2011.
From now till the end of the show, all 13 finalists will live in an apartment and will be tutored by a professional group of music instructors whose job is to polish the contestants and make their songs ready for public hearing.
Here they are:
23 year old, Ajumoke Nwaeze in 2008 with 5 other guys won the 2008 edition of the talent competition known as Star Quest under the group name of Diamondz. After their success at the competition the group went ahead to release an album. AJ left Diamondz in 2010 based on the fact that she ‘wanted to find herself’.
A student of Genetics and Bio Technology in the University of Calabar, AJ confesses that she was heart-broken when she was first evicted and was beginning to move on with her life when she got the call to come back to the show.  Now that she’s back, she is aiming for the greatness which eluded her as a suppressed member in her former band.

Alex’s place in the top thirteen is one bought by chance. He had the third-highest number of votes in his group of ten which meant that he would not make it to the final stage. However, prior to the eviction show, Ken, the contestant who won the highest number of votes, had decided to drop out of the competition to accept his admission to a Master’s degree programme in the UK. This catapulted Alex into second place and automatically into the top thirteen. However, Alex does not consider this surprising twist as a lucky break but as scenario ‘pre-ordained by God’
As a boy, he spent five years immobile on a hospital bed due to a strange infection in both of his legs. During this period, he was told that he would lose at least one of his legs. Today he not only has use of both his legs, but also is a member of a dance group.
A fairly reserved person, the twenty-five year old RnB crooner is more animated when he is on stage. Singing, for him, is a form of expressing himself. ‘I feel everything I have to say, the story of my life should come through music’, he says.

Biodun Bello aka Bibi comes from a family of singers. Although a member of her church choir, she never took music seriously. She came on to Nigeria Idol thanks to encouragement from her friends. The Law student from Igbinedion University intends to continue singing whether she wins Nigerian Idol or not.
Bibi’s best friend Glory is also part of the top 13. Bibi is open to the possibility of either of them winning the show and does not feel that it would affect their friendship adversely.
Although she has been told by others that her biggest threat in the competition is Glory, Bibi believes its AJ.

Chito is perhaps the competition’s most colorful and vibrant contestant. The self-confessed tom boy who has a lot of scars to show for it, says that she is more of a rapper than a singer.
Her energetic persona and performance on stage not only got the attention of the judges but that of award-winning Nigerian female rap superstar, Sasha P who endorsed Chito via her Twitter account. Despite her beautiful performances she got evicted from the show but was called back as a wild card contestant.
Now back in the competition, Chito says she is aiming to win Nigerian Idol because it will serve as a platform for her and as a means to help people. One of her targets in life is to become a successful talk-show host and in her own words ‘give Ellen Degeneres a run for her money’.

If you describe Emmanuel Patrick fondly called Emmanuel the Great as a church boy, you won’t be wrong at all. Emmanuel can’t remember the number of churches he’s been a member of, and sang actively in their choir, in his young life!
An ex-student of St. Gregory’s College and a 2006 sociology graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, he doesn’t see any contestant as a direct threat to him because all the contestants are unique in their own way and goes further to describe them all as “all brothers and sisters.” He says he’s not seeing anyone at the moment but reveals he is working towards a relationship and has a lady in mind who he avows is not in the competition though.

George’s interest in music started from when he was a child. He learnt to play the piano at the age of nine and it has since become his passion. As a youth, he joined his choir and from there decided to go into music professionally. However, in spite of his love for music, he went on to study Environmental Management and Geography at the university because of pressure from his family.
He considers himself a songwriter as well as a singer and writes and plays his own songs on the piano. For him, being in the Nigerian Idol competition is an avenue to express himself and display his talents.
If he wins the competition, he intends to invest the prize money in developing himself, but most importantly, he plans to continue in music whether or not he wins the Nigerian Idol.  Although he expects to win, he sees the possibility of a girl going home as the Nigerian Idol.

Glory, a 22 year Law undergraduate at the University of Abuja did not just stumble into music. Her parents met and got married as members of the Deeper Life Church Choir. So it is not much of a surprise that she started singing in the Deeper Life Children’s Choir at the tender age of 5.
Glory has a passion for people and helping them gives her joy. That is why she chose to study Law. In her 300 level now, Glory can hardly wait to complete her education so she can help people.
Glory was born and brought up in Abuja. She sees no fellow contestant as a threat in the competition, not even her very close childhood friend Bibi.

Naomi might be the youngest contestant in Nigerian Idol now but her confidence and carriage doesn’t betray her 19 years of age. Born and raised in Ajegunle, the smallish singer bashfully confesses that she has never been to her home state of Bayelsa.
She started singing at age 7 when she and her sisters formed a group. The group of sisters started singing in their church and later in other churches in other states.
On being on Nigerian Idol, she feels great and honoured to be part of the epic music reality show. ‘It’s like a dream come true for me’, she says as she tags her most memorable performance as the one where she had to dress like a guy so she could perform an R.Kelly number.

Unlike most of the other contestants, Nina has a background in dance and not music. She has been a dancer since childhood and was a member of a dance group in university. The group also incorporated singing in their performances. This was how Nina discovered her singing talent and decided to take it more seriously in her final year at the university.
Nina is a lawyer and she plans to practice much later in life. But right now, she intends to focus more on her music career.

Ola is the group’s ‘king of cool’. The 22 year old undergraduate claims that even though he is the first to sing professionally in his family, his family members are involved in music, whether singing on an amateur level or just appreciating good music.
He can’t place his finger on a specific time in his childhood when he started singing but he states that it has been as long as he could remember. Prior to Nigerian Idol, his singing had never been judged before. ‘Facing judges and a critical audience has been he says good, scary and exciting’, he explains.
Despite the aggressive nature of the music industry, Ola doesn’t intend to change his laidback personality to suit the industry. He believes instead that the industry will get used to and appreciate him.

Toni is one of the lucky three who got called back during the Wild Card episode of the show. Apart from being a singer, she plays the guitar and writes her own songs. Her mature vocals and stirring interpretations have endeared her to the judges especially Audu Maikori who has been her champion and the speculated author of her comeback to the show.
In 2004, Toni recorded a self-released album and even shot a video, an event which although it gave her some exposure, failed to shoot her to the limelight or earn her a record deal.
She says that although she has gone through a lot of struggle stemming from the death of her father at an early age, an event that led to her and her mother being chased out of her family home, Toni says is thankful that these challenges rather than break her have helped to make her stronger and determined to succeed in life.

Onyeka Gilbert looks like a model straight from a fashion magazine. She was once crowned Queen of Abia at a beauty pageant in 2006. Winning the beauty pageant opened up a lot of doors for her but according to the tall, dark beauty being the Queen of Abia didn’t really pan out well as she expected.
Her real passion in life had always been music. From a tender age, she had been singing with her family band. The band’s work however was put on hold indefinitely with the death of her mother in 2001 and then fully so when her father passed on 5 years later.
Yeka’s confidence was not dented by her orphan state. Rather than accept ‘no’ from the Idol judges at the audition stage, the 26 year old beauty embarked on an ‘Idol mini tour’ that took her from Enugu to Calabar and finally Lagos where she eventually got her ‘Yes’! With that mentality she is giving Nigerian Idol all that she’s got.

Zoe started singing from her church and has been a member of her church choir from childhood. She has not ever had any professional training in music.
She joined the Nigeria Idol competition because she wants to explore her talent. According to her, the experience so far has been great. “I have learnt so many things from our coaches, the judges and my fellow contestants,” she says. “It has made me more hardworking and I relate with people better.”
She attributes her presence in the top 13 to favor from God as there were so many of her fellow contestants who were equally talented or better that did not make it. If she had to pick the three contestants for the Wild Card, she would have chosen AJ, Rachael and Leonard.

The Prayer Connection

Sam Adeyemi
James 5: 13-18

The simple definition of prayer is communication with God. There are several dimensions to prayer – worship is a primary dimension where we praise Him for His worth, others are consecration, intercession and petition. Prayer is a dialogue not a monologue, a conversation between us and God; we speak and He listens, we, too, must learn to listen to God because He has things He wants to say to us as well. Listening is a significant factor in communication. The effectiveness of prayer is not based primarily on the technique but in the quality of our relationship with God. God is more interested in the state of our heart and our relationship with Him, therefore, in prayer, we should focus on our relationship with God because God deals with our conscience. Not every prayer is acceptable to God; He's not interested in the prayer of the wicked, it's an abomination to Him. Enoch had the best testimony ever - that He pleased God. Enoch pleased God because he had faith in Him. Without faith, it's impossible to please God, for anyone who comes to God must first believe that He exists as the Ultimate. Faith is the reality of believing in an invisible God to the extent that you do all to please Him. The time has come for true worshippers to seek God in spirit and in truth, not merely seeking gifts but a relationship with God. He rewards those that diligently seek Him, not those who diligently seek gifts! Seek the Giver not the gifts. The first commandment is to love God with all your heart and mind, when we do this, God becomes real to us and we experience boundless possibilities. Consider David in the bible, some bible scholars feel he was born out of an adulterous relationship and relegated to the back in his family, yet when God needed a king to lead His people, He chose him because his heart panted after God, developed an intimate relationship with Him and became a man after God's heart. When last did you express to God how much you need to know Him? It's time to build an intimate relationship with God; it's the foundation for prayer. Our greatest aspiration should be to walk with God not to work for God.

According to, Snoop Dogg has released a video where he asks Lady Gaga to record a song with him. The rap vet stated, "Attention, this is an APB (all-points bulletin) out for Lady Gaga, big Snoop Dogg is lookin' for you, I'm trying to do a song with you. It's a real nice freaky deaky kind of song. Get at me." The rapper is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Doggumentary, which is slated for a March release.

According to The Detroit News, Nas reportedly owes over six-million dollars in back taxes to the IRS. The rapper, who is currently paying 25-thousand a month in child and spousal support, fell behind on the payments for his property in Eagles Landing, Georgia.

The Royal Families” aka The Camels Carters And The Smiths Partner To Form Film Company

That’s a LOT of money in that picture. Sweet black love in the building ya’ll…
Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and their partners at Overbrook Entertainment have formed a joint-venture with Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter to develop and produce major motion pictures. First up? A remake of the Broadway musical “Annie,” in which Will and Jada’s daughter, Willow — who recently signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label — will star in.
Although the project is in its preliminary stages, it will be developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced by Overbrook and Jay.
The partnership between Will and Jada and Jay-Z began when the three decided to invest in the beauty line Carol’s Daughter. Their next venture together was when they joined forces again to co-produce the Broadway play “Fela!” Since then, Willow, who is managed by Overbrook’s Miguel Melendez, has signed to Roc Nation and released first single “Whip My Hair.”
“The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. We’ve already produced a Tony Award-winning play and we’re developing a true superstar in Willow,” said Jay-Z in a statement. “This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative and innovative.”
Is there ANYTHING that these couples can’t do?? It’s f*cking awesome to see black couples and their children building empires and achieving new levels of success and empowerment. Clap for ‘em

“Bunmi Ademokoya is the love of my life’, “No, she’s not!” – Ex-Mr Nigeria, Bryan Okwara

“What can I say? She’s the love of my life. She is amazing. She is gorgeous. She is black. She is beautiful. She is my friend. She is a colleague. She cooks. She cleans. She’s God fearing. She’s somebody you want to meet anyday, anytime.” Bryan Okwara to Bola Akinboade of City People (this week) when asked if he was in a sizzling romance with top model, Bunmi Ademokoya.

Bryan really made that statement? Hard to believe, because this same week he denied dating the beautiful model to an Encomium magazine reporter.
Read it after the cut...
“There’s a report you are dating Bunmi. How true is it?”
“I have heard the story, but I don’t want to comment because it’s not true. I am not dating Bunmi. She is a colleague. We are together in the modeling industry. Bunmi is a friend and not a lover.” Bryan Okwara to Rasheed Abubakar of Encomium

See the confusion?

The Nigerian entertainment industry is well known for graduating artistes, who come into the limelight and fade out after a few hits; only a few are able to stay grounded and maintain a relationship with their fans in what is tagged: “the comeback” and if a comeback is anything to go by then Afro hip hop crooner Jazzman Olofin’s efforts should set him right back where he used to belong, atop the charts as he released his album “READY TO GO” on January 18, 2011.

The album, which produced a single “Erekere” featuring the late Rapper DaGrin has enjoyed airplay across radio stations while the video has been aired on local and international TV networks in Nigeria.

Jazzman Olofin, known for his smooth fusion of R&B and Hip Hop first introduced himself to the Nigerian audience in a group called X-APPEAL alongside fellow artiste Lexzy Doo who is featured in his current effort “READY TO GO”.

Describing his music as “original flavored Nigerian Hip Hop”, this album will appeal to the musical needs of fans that are aware of the gap his break from the industry created.
The 13-track album features notable names like M.I and OJB Jezreel.

FBI: Ex Super Eagles’ Defender Uche Okafor was Murdered.

There has been a twist in the death of former Eagles’ defender, Uche Okafor as the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) claimed in a report yesterday that the player was murdered.
Uche was found hanging at his Dallas, Texas home earlier this month and a preliminary report by the Dallas police ruled that the easy-going defender hanged himself. But his family, friends and the Nigerian community in America rejected the suicide claims as they suspected foul play.
The FBI stepped into the controversy last week after protests from the family members who even alleged racism for the shoddy investigation over the death of the player. And the latest findings have confirmed the suspicion of murder held by many of the former Eagles’ admirers. The FBI report however, did not state who killed Uche Okafor or why his life was terminated.
This piece of information from the USA, will interest the Nigerian government. The foreign affairs Minister, Odein Ajumogobia declared only on Monday that Nigeria was awaiting the result of the FBI report, before the country could take necessary action.
A source close to the family disclosed that the latest twist in the death of the player was quite a relief to his tribesmen who are holding on to an ancient myth that it was a taboo for an Ibo man to take his own life.
Uche Okafor’s Eagles colleagues and indeed Nigerians also struggled to come to terms with the death of the player who was comfortably living with his wife and daughter. He was into business and also into football commentary with ESPN sports.
It was gathered that the corpse of the departed player will be flown in for burial next month.

Bristol Palin's Got a New Man!

Bristol Palin Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images
Bristol Palin's life is heating up, and not just because she bought a house in Arizona.
The 20-year-old mom admitted in a radio interview this morning that she has a new man in her life (and Sarah Palin probably approves, because he's a good ole Alaskan).
"Are you guys getting personal with me, really?" Bristol replied, when the hosts of the Anchorage-based Bob & Mark show on KWHL-FM inquired about her rumored pipeline-worker beau.

INEC blames corpers for faulty DDC Machines

I'm sure you all have heard that the newly acquired DDC machines is giving officials plenty wahala, rejecting finger prints etc...well INEC ain't blaming the machines, they are blaming the electoral officials...who are mostly corpers.

INEC's statement: “We assumed that these corps members should know how to operate a simple machine like the DDC machine in addition to the training they had but unfortunately, they disappointed us..These are graduates and we never expected it that any of them won’t be able to handle a computer but the reality was such that majority of them couldn’t and we had to shuffle them,”

J Sleek in Auto Accident

Although details are still scanty,  TT sources have informed that one of Nigeria’s gifted producers J Sleek was involved in an auto crash in the cause of the week, leaving him with a broken arm.
Just confirmed the incident now from a friend who picked his call. It’s an auto related accident. He had a broken arm‘, a close friend of the producer tells us.
J Sleek is still being treated at an undisclosed hospital as at press time.
J Sleek is a Nigerian music producer best known for songs he has produced for 2face Idibia (‘Enter the place‘, ‘Implication‘) , Sound Sultan and Cartiair.

After investigation, we can authoritatively tell you that J Sleek along with three other people riding in a car, were on their way from Festac to GET Arena for an Etisalat show when the car tumbled about four times leaving only the young producer who sat behind badly hurt.
He is currently admitted at the Holy Family hospital in Festac, where he is receiving treatment.
