“They Kidnapped My Mom Over the Fuel Subsidy!” Okonjo-Iweala Declares In Wild Claim

Federal minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and mom
Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a shocking accusation, declared that the kidnappers of her 83 year old mother were seeking revenge for the government’s decision to end popular gas subsidies.
After a press conference at which she thanked the country for its prayers for her mother’s safe return, she took a sudden turn and launched into a vitriolic attack on presumed members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party of President Goodluck Jonathan who had thwarted her plans to eliminate the oil payments.
"They told (my mother) that I must get on the radio and television and announce my resignation," the minister said. "When she asked why, they told her it was because I did not pay oil subsidy money."
Okonjo-Iweala's mother, Kamene Okonjo, was kidnapped Dec. 9 from her hometown of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State. During her time held captive, Okonjo received no food or water, her daughter said.
Okonjo-Iweala declined to take questions from journalists at the conference. Her mother was released by her kidnappers Friday. It is unclear if a ransom was paid, though most abductions in Nigeria only end once a payment is made.
As finance minister, Okonko-Iweala was behind a government decision in January 2012 to end subsidies for gasoline, a decision that sparked a major nationwide strike and widespread protests by affected citizens in what some called “Occupy Nigeria.” President Jonathan later reinstated a partial subsidy.
The subsidies are opposed by international finance organization because they are used pay off companies at inflated rates to bring in gasoline because Nigeria does not refine enough oil to meet demand. The oil is then sold at below-market prices.
Gasoline importation licenses are widely seen as a means of patronage, as the number of companies involved jumped from six in 2006 to 140 in 2011. In 2009, when there were 36 companies licensed to import, government officials once issued about $800 million in 128 transactions in a 24-hour period without proper documentation, according to the report.
In recent months, Okonjo-Iweala has again said the subsidy must be entirely removed because the country cannot afford it. That has led to panic gasoline buying and fuel shortages around the country as importers have held back from bringing it in. Citizens also believe the fuel subsidies represent the only benefit they see from the country's oil production, which has benefited the nation's kleptocratic ruling class for decades, according to many reports.

R&B singer Trey Songz arrested for assaulting a striper with a ‘wad of cash’

“He chucked a wad of cash at me,” McIntosh-Inoe told the Daily News. “A wad of cash.”
The Staten Island woman, who went to the club with her husband to see the “I Gotta Make It” star, said the knot of bills struck her so hard that it left her with a black eye.
“I didn’t even know I had a bruise on my face until after I left the club,” she said. “I had to walk around a whole week with a black eye.”
Her husband said the couple paid $700 to sit with the musician — whose real name is Tremaine Neverson — in the VIP section of the club, where he held a release party for his fifth studio album “Studio V.”
McIntosh-Inoe, a nurse, said the spat began when she snapped a cell phone picture of Songz, who quickly grabbed the phone and tried to delete the photograph.
“Everyone else was taking a picture,” she said. “The difference for me and the other girls is that they were naked and I had clothes on.”
But the frustrated Songz couldn’t trash the picture, so he threw the money at her face instead.
“He tried to delete the picture, but he didn’t know how to use my phone,” she said. McIntosh-Inoe said she couldn’t bring herself to pick up the discarded greenbacks.
“It was insulting that he just threw something,” she said. “He was verbally disrespectful as well. . . . He embarrassed me in front of everyone in the club.”
Songz never came out to apologize after the scuffle was broken up, she said.
McIntosh-Inoe went to a police station near her house and reported the incident.
Songz was arrested on Sept. 20 and slapped with misdemeanor assault and harassment charges, said a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. An order of protection was issued after he appeared in court on Nov. 1.
The musician’s representatives at Atlantic Records did not respond to a request for comment.

Petroleum Minister Allison-Madueke Returns To Hospital In London

Petroleum Resources minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke
According to Sahara Reporters, Nigeria’s controversial Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, has returned to a London hospital to continue treatment for an undisclosed ailment that is believed to be cancer.
Saharareporters sources said today that Mrs. Allison-Madueke made the journey last week, and began a daily therapy.  She is yet to return to Abuja.

Her one-week absence from Abuja has emboldened those Nigerians who have been calling for her removal to further pressure President Goodluck Jonathan to sack her as Minister of Petroleum Resources.  She is frequently cited on allegations of corruption and mismanagement, but is also known to be a close friend of the President’s.

Recently, the French government impounded a private jet that was carrying Jide Omokore, a business associate of the Minister, on suspicions that the jet-a Bombardier Global Express XRS- belongs to her.
Investigations show that the jet was purchased by the Bank of Utah Trustee in June 2012 through the same process that was recently used in purchasing private jets for the governors of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States.

Gabriel Aubry Will Not Face Charges for Brawl

Gabriel Aubry, Halle Berry

Gabriel Aubry has been given an early Christmas gift. He will officially not be hit with any charges stemming from the Thanksgiving Day fight with Halle Berry's fiancé, Olivier Martinez.

In lieu of a criminal trial, Aubry will have to attend an informal hearing to discuss his fight with Martinez. As a result of settling the matter, Berry, Martinez and Aubry's attorneys will avoid a messy court battle.

Even though Aubry wound up with the bruised and bloody face, investigators believe he was the person who started the altercation which took place in front of Berry’s home. The potential charges arising from the fight stood to further complicate the court drama between Berry and Aubry over custody of their daughter, Nahla.

This past Monday, the two were back in court trying to work out a settlement on attorney fees. To make the custody proceedings easier, Aubry and Martinez have both dropped their respective charges against each other stemming from the brawl.

Man Stabs 22 Children in a School in China

Police arrested a 36-year-old local man who stabbed 22 children, at least two of them seriously, and one adult at the gate of a Henan grade school in central China.

This latest attack happened as pupils were arriving for classes. A county hospital administrator reportedly said that the man first attacked an elderly woman, then the children, before being overpowered by security guards.

Two of the injured pupils have been transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

In recent years, knife attacks have broken out, resulting in increased security in China’s schools. Many of the attackers have been mentally disturbed men, suggesting that the country’s rapid social changes and lack of a modernized hospital system may be contributing to a rising number of mental illness cases.

PRAISE IN WARFARE by Sam Adeyemi

 Psalm 149: 1-9
David had a testimony of unending victories and never lost a single battle even though he found himself in overwhelming situations. The secret was that he had a close relationship with God and knew how to praise Him. When you know how to secure God’s company in the midst of life’s battles, then you know how to experience victory every single time. Ephesians 6:12 says that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers”. Many people fight the wrong enemies as they are not fully conscious of the fact that the physical world is controlled by the invisible world. By being a creation of God, you are automatically Satan’s enemy and Satan opposes everything that is of God. However, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 tells us about the efficacy of the invisible weapons God has equipped us with to carry out warfare and praise is one of those weapons. Through praise, you transfer your battles to God because He is enthroned in the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3).
In Joshua 5:13-15, Joshua learnt an interesting secret as he approached Jericho with the children of Israel. God had given Joshua a promise that no man would be able to successfully withstand him in battle (Joshua 1:3). Joshua believed this word so much that when he now faced this Man dressed in military attire, he was fearless in confronting him. When the Man introduced Himself as the Commander of the Lord’s army, Joshua knew that God Himself had appeared on the scene and fell to the ground in worship. The Commander then asked him to remove his sandal. In the Jewish culture, when a person handed over his sandals, it symbolised the fact that he was handing over his right to an inheritance or a property. The handing over of sandals can be compared to the modern-day Certificate of Occupancy.  In other words, all the responsibility for victory in the battle was given to God. When we praise God, we recognise that He is the Commander of the Lord’s army and we hand over to Him. While Joshua worshipped, God gave him clear instructions for the battle against Jericho (Joshua 6:20). When God arises, His enemies will be scattered; when He shows up, everything changes for good. (Ps 68: 1-4)
A practical demonstration of praise at work is seen in 2 Chronicles 20:14-24. Jehoshaphat was completely overwhelmed when faced by the armies of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir and the situation looked impossible. While the whole of Judah gathered to seek the Lord’s face, the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel and he prophesied and gave instructions for the battle.  Jehoshaphat then appointed those who would sing praises and as they praised the Lord, God set ambushes against the armies of the three nations. The enemies fought themselves until they were completely destroyed and Judah did not have to fight. (vv 21-24). Stop measuring yourself against the situation. Measure God against the situation and you will no longer be overwhelmed. Take your eyes off the size of the problem and focus on God’s size.
If you want to displace principalities and powers, you must discover the secret of praise (Psalm 149: 6-9). The things that are impossible with man are possible with God. As you praise God this month, you will step into the realm of possibilities!

CELEB INTERVIEW: Wizkid says he’s not competing with Davido

About Davido and I
There is certainly no friction between Davido and I. We are friends, just as I am friendly with other Nigerian artistes. I think some people are just saying what comes to their minds. When I emerged as a singer, people were comparing me with Wande Coal. The sky is big enough for every bird to fly.  He (Davido) has not stolen my fans. Nobody has said that he has lured my fans away. I am still performing at shows and getting well paid for it. I am not competing with him either. My fans still show me love. But then, in Nigeria, all of us actually have the same fans. If I mount the stage, people will scream. They will do the same thing if Tuface appears on stage, too. This shows that the sky is big enough for all of us. You cannot be alone in the music industry. We need more people. This is not a one-man show.

This was Wizkid's stance in an interview granted The Punch Newspapers yesterday.

Azazi, Yakowa, others perish in crash

It was a harvest of tragedy on Saturday as Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State, the immediate national security adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi, and four others were killed in a military helicopter crash at Okoroba Village in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Others involved in the accident were Yakowa’s Special Adviser, Dauda Tsoho; Azazi’s bodyguard, Warrant Officer Mohammed Kamal and two Naval pilots, Commander Murtala Mohammed Daba and Lt. Adeyemi Sowole.
The victims were returning to Port Harcourt after they attended the funeral ceremony of late Mr. Tamunoobebara Douglas, the father of the Presidential Adviser on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Mr. Oronto Douglas, when the incident happened.
They were said to have been badly burnt and only identified by the shreds of their clothes.
Azazi and Yakowa’s mobile phones rang out continually without any response when several calls were put across to them by some top government officials.
Our correspondent gathered that the naval helicopter was heading for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but developed a fault and crashed in the village, which also shares a boundary with Nembe Local Government Area.
The Director of Information of the Nigerian Navy, Commodore Kabir Aliyu, confirmed that a Nigerian Navy helicopter was involved in the crash which occurred around 3:30pm.
Aliyu who was silent on the identities of those involved in the crash said a rescue operation comprising personnel of the Joint Task Force, Operation Pulo Shield, the Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and the National Emergency Management Agency, were at work in Bayelsa.
Our correspondent further gathered that the former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr. Timi Alaibe, narrowly escaped the crash.
A police source who pleaded anonymity said he was scheduled to board the helicopter but that there was a last minute change in the schedule.
The source said, “Two helicopters took off at the same time. After sometime, we saw the one behind us wobbling and nosediving into the swamp.
“The helicopter took off and was already stabilised on air. It had gained balance and started flying but unfortunately it came crashing.
“We are not suspecting any sabotage because the burial ground was well policed. There were gunboats surrounding the place and many security operatives at the burial ground.”
The former Chairman of the Okoroba Community Development Committee, Mr. Hitler Adunion, told SUNDAY PUNCH that he was the first person to locate the site of the incident.
Adunion said “We sighted the chopper wobbling and crash-landing. By the time we got to the scene, the helicopter was in flames. We tried to put out the flame but it was difficult. We saw the roasted bodies of those inside it.”
Around 7pm on Saturday, NEMA said it had activated its search and rescue team.
“NEMA has activated its search and rescue team in collaboration with other response agencies at the crash site,” Yushau Shuaib of NEMA headquarters was quoted as saying.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State, Mr. Fidelis Odunna, confirmed the incident.
The Secretary to the Kaduna State government, Mr. Lawal Abdullahi on Saturday night also confirmed Yakowa’s death.
He said, “Yakowa on Thursday presented a budget to the state House of Assembly. His last official engagement was his visit to the Barau Dikko Specialists Hospital.”
The air crash came  barely two months after the Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Danbaba Suntai, was critically injured in a similar crash in Adamawa State with his two aides.
The governor is currently receiving medical attention in Germany

EFCC Arrests Jigawa State Governor’s Son at Airport with $50,000

In recent times, more and more Nigerians have been arrested trying to travel out of the country with large sums of money which exceed the legal amount for traveling.
Yesterday, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrestedAminu Lamido, son of the Jigawa state governor at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, for money laundering.
According to Channels TV, an undisclosed sum of $40,000 was found on him as he prepared to board an Egypt bound flight.
Sources close to the Commission told Channels TV that Lamido was flagged after he declared $10,000 in his possession to agents of the Nigerian customs at the airport. Further checks by the agents revealed that he had an additional $40,000 which he did not declare.
In September, a 24 year-old man, Abubakar Tijani Sheriff was arrested for attempting to travel with the sum of $7 million (N1, 120,000billion). He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International airport, Lagos as he was trying to travel to Dubai aboard a United Arab Emirates flight.
Abubakar’s arrest further exposed the rising rate of money laundering in Nigeria. Travellers leaving the country are statutorily required to declare cash in excess of $10,000. However, what makes this one even more interesting is the fact that the person arrested is the son of a state governor.
He is now being detained by the EFCC.

WHERE IS THE MONEY? Jonathan threatens to sanction MDAs over non-remittance of funds

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday threatened that he would wield the big stick against any ministry, department or agency of government that failed to render accounts or did so late.
He said the full weight of the law would also be made to fall on agencies that failed to remit their operating surpluses.
Jonathan spoke shortly after swearing in two members of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and two members of the National Population Commission at the Presidential Villa, Abuja before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts had on November 19, 2012 summoned the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and heads of many Federal Government MDAs over the alleged non-remittance of revenues totalling N4tn to the Federation Account.
The revenues were collected from 2006 to 2009, according to a report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, which the committee is currently working on.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Solomon Adeola, confirmed to journalists that it was investigating the activities of 60 out of the 601 MDAs.
Adeola said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation alone had $7bn recorded against it as revenue shortfall within the period, adding that another discovery was that the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas had not remitted any fund to the Federal Government for over seven years.
But Jonathan said his administration would no longer allow such a situation to continue.
“Let me use this occasion to warn government agencies that, henceforth, non-rendition or late rendition of accounts or non-remittance of operating surpluses will attract the full weight of actions as prescribed by law. Also, our commitment to building strong institutions in the lifetime of this administration shall remain unwavering,” the President declared
