Sex and the City 2 (SATC), a movie produced by Warners’ New Line unit, stars Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda who are collectively known as ‘The Fabulous Four.’ In this sequel to the 2008 blockbuster, Sex and the City, which is billed to premiere in Lagos, this month the ladies take another bite out of the big apple.
According to organisers of the release, the Nigerian outing will feature a special night out with film’s team. Tagged Sex and the City 2 after release party, the event is scheduled for May 28, at a yet to be disclosed venue in Lagos.
Prior to that a special black tie cocktail will hold on May 27. Promoted as an ‘Intimate Night Out’ with Sex and the City 2, the cocktail couture event with 1980’s flash back, will feature four top Nigerian and international designers.
The showcase will celebrate exotic Nigerian fashion, whilst also highlighting aspects of the styles, tastes and lives of The Fabulous Four ladies whose fashion sense in the movie have inspired a lot of contemporary women’s wardrobes. Dress code for the night is black tie.
The Sex and the City 2 after release party is being packaged to be dotted heavily with fun as guests will be able to taste what the organisrs describe as “delicious SATC signature cosmopolitan cocktails” on arrival. To get into the spirit of the night, ladies will be encouraged to dress as one of their favourite characters from the movie as this would get them the chance to win any of the many prizes that will be on display at the event.
Speaking on the project, the Chief Executive Officer of Okhma Global International, the marketing company handling the movie’s promotion in Nigeria for the continental organisation, Pan Africa Distribution, Mary Ephraim informed that lovers of the film and their freinds are in for a fulfilled moment with the coming of Sex and the City 2.
“We expect to have so much fun as the platform will provide an opportunity for all lovers of the foursome to live their lives even for just a minute,” she said.
Explaining further, Joy Ilibeno, Manager West Africa, Pan Africa Distribution, hinted that “the night will also have on parade top-rated Nigerian musicians, with a special appearance by American R&B artiste, Carl Thomas and Nigeria’s MI.”
Sex and the City was a box office success with a fast spreading worldwide fan base.
Success of the debut of the feature film encouraged the making of a sequel. Director, Michael Patrick King explains: “One of the reasons I came up with the Sex and the City 2 movie, the feeling of it, the tone of it, is because of the audience reaction to the first one.”
King said he observed when the movie opened, lines of women dressed up and going to party in the peculiar fashion of The Fabulous Four. “I thought to myself, I want the sequel to be the continuation of the party. I want it to be the party.
“I think the actresses embody something very special – a vibrancy that has to do with women’s lives. I feel this enormous love towards these characters and this brand and a gratefulness that it’s happening for them, and these four characters still live on and we get to see them grow and change.”
He further explained his approach to creating the contagious characters, stating that writing the lives of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha “is a responsibility because each of those women is reflected in the viewing audience.
“I think with four women characters, you have a pretty wide range of types of choices, and you have to be very, very diligent about where you think the women might be, because I think, the success of it all is that it has dealt with what people are dealing with in their own lives. Maybe not in the same glamorous way, but the emotions are the same. It’s about moving forward, and the fun thing about writing these characters, is that I’m not afraid to write the choices they make that move them in a different direction, because that’s what happens in life all of the time,” King said.
Producer, John Melfi said making a sequel is lifting the enging tales of the film to higher level. “For Sex and the City, it’s pretty exciting to go to the next chapter and see what happens after ‘happily ever after’... This is what happened. These four characters start off in a realistic situation, and then we throw them on the road together and make a road picture – a buddy picture,” he said.
