M Being Drunk in the Holy Spirit ...by Sam Adeyemi

Ephesians 5: 18-20

A person who is drunk has taken so much alcohol that they cannot speak clearly or behave sensibly. Apostle Paul compares the feeling of being drunk to being filled with the Holy Spirit. Why do people get drunk? People get drunk because drunkenness dulls our true emotions and creates an illusion of euphoria. Drugs similarly, transform the mind of the user.

Paul, in Ephesians 5:18-20, admonishes that we mustn't get drunk with wine; rather we should be filled with the Holy Spirit because if you seek succour in wine or drugs they will ultimately destroy you. The first time people were filled with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2, they were accused of being drunk. This is because there are similarities in the reactions to being filled with the Holy Spirit and being filled with wine. When people are filled with the Holy Spirit they prophesy; also when people are drunk they speak loudly, laugh unnecessarily and talk loosely. A Spirit filled person develops confidence, like David when he faced Goliath; similarly if a person stays long enough with the bottle, he develops a fool’s confidence.

There is a craving in everybody for a higher form of existence. This is because, being created in God's image and likeness, we are designed to exist in an environment of love, joy, peace, happiness and prosperity; but when we encounter limitations, we begin to experiment with drugs, alcohol and other mediums to achieve or capture the godly state of living. It is only the Holy Spirit Who can give us the pleasurable living we crave. So, if we are going to indulge in anything, let's indulge in an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit takes us beyond the limits of our natural understanding and abilities. With the Holy Spirit we are able to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, live extraordinary lives and have God's power flow through us. The best way to get drunk in the Spirit is to spend time in the word, pray in tongues regularly and deliberately put yourself in the frequency of the Holy Spirit.

“Work in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh”.
