A man named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula has been identified by a U.S law enforcement agent as the filmmaker behind the anti-Islam movie which has caused a lot of protests and discontent in the Arab world in the past few days.
The movie has caused a lot of protests in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen with the Benghazi, Libya protests taking the life of the U.S Ambassador, Christopher Stevens.
The U.S law enforcement official who leaked the details to the press preferred to maintain anonymity because investigations are still ongoing in the case which has sparked widespread international protests.
Though a man known as Sam Bacile had been preliminarily fingered as the creator of the film, The Associated Press has connected Nakoula to the Bacile persona.
Nakoula, 55, told The AP in an interview outside Los Angeles a few days ago that he managed logistics for the company that produced the film.
But the mobile phone number that the press contacted on Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where Nakoula was located.
Federal court papers filed in a 2010 criminal prosecution against him said Nakoula had used numerous aliases in the past. Among the fake names, the documents said, were Nicola Bacily and Erwin Salameh.
The U.S authorities are looking beyond the creator of the film into speculation which indicate the Embassy attacks might have been pre-planned terrorist strike linked to the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
