The Cancellation of NYSC

Ikechukwu Ukeoma alongside many other youths in the service of a nation that has offered nothing but disservice to its citizenry have lost their lives to a scheme introduced by the Nigeria Government since the 1970's. The scheme called the National youth service corps was aimed at fostering national unity; however since its inception, many young men and women who would have impacted positively to the lives of their families who struggled to foster their education up to graduate degrees have had their dreams cut short by accidents, religious crises and much negative ills of which the recent post election violence in some Northern states of Nigeria were. For one, the citizenry largely wonder why one should serve a nation that has offered nothing to these short-lived destinies; the government never aided the families of these fallen ones through raising their wards up to their present educational status. In fact, this same government made it difficult for any of these fallen wards to graduate from their dilapidated educational institutions in record time except for a few who were fortunate to attend private institutions. So the question still remains on the lips of many Nigerians why service to a dis-servicing elected, self-garnishing autocratic group of selfish people who care nothing for the scheme but contracts awarded and monies generated through the scheme? The kits used by those participating in the scheme are sub-standard, security is not available to the corps members and the youth who are supposed to be the future of the nation are murdered, maimed, burnt and raped. We beckon on the international community to put pressure on the Nigerian government to call off the scheme ASAP as restructuring and putting the lives of more Nigerian youths will no longer be accommodated and a mass boycott of the Nigerian professionals from the economy will be enacted.
