Ephesians 6: 10-12 & 2 Corinthians 10: 3-5
As we engage in spiritual warfare, we need to properly understand the landscape of the battlefield. It is very important that we realise that our enemies in this conflict are not other human beings who may be used as agents, platforms or part of the terrain where we wage this warfare, but our enemies are principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age and wicked spirits in heavenly places (Ephesians 6: 10-12). The first terrain for spiritual warfare is the heavenly places. We are in conflict with Satan and other demonic entities who belong to a hierarchy in Satan’s kingdom (listed above). He also has other beings that he deploys on his assignments. We are dealing with demonic entities that operate in our world but their main domicile is described as the “heavenly places”.
Daniel had been praying and fasting for three weeks but the day the angel showed up with the answer, he told Daniel that from the very first day Daniel prayed, he had been dispatched with the answer which included revelations about future world events. On his way to Daniel, he confronted a demonic entity called the prince or principality of Persia, who was only defeated after Archangel Michael came to help the angel. (Daniel 10: 10-20). Satan has deployed territorial spirits over different geographic locations, estates, cities, nations and even continents. This explains why, in some instances, there are results or scenarios which are consistent across particular locations because Satan influences the events.
When the Bible records that ‘the heavens opened’ like it happened at the River Jordan when Jesus was baptized, it means that God has given someone the authority to displace territorial spirits and to exert influence over a particular territory. Sometimes, there are territorial spirits over an industry, a line of business, a career or a profession and so we need to exercise authority over them before we experience victory and take over the territories that God has given us. Jesus paralyzed the activities of Satan and the territorial spirits so that the disciples were able to exercise authority in His name (Luke 10: 1, 17-18).
The second terrain for spiritual warfare is the human mind (2 Corinthians 10: 3-5). It is therefore important to know that the quality of a man’s life can never be better than the quality of his thoughts. Whoever controls your thoughts controls your life. Satan always seeks to dominate every human being’s thought pattern (2 Corinthians 4:4). Before Eve was tempted, Satan painted a picture in her mind such that she already imagining what the fruit tasted like before she even ate it (Genesis 3:6). The place where you make contact with the spirit world is in the realm of your thoughts because you cannot relate with the spiritual world with your five physical senses. That is why you have to spend time in prayer, fill your mind and spirit with God’s word and revelation. Territorial spirits move humans through thoughts and ideas so you need to be able to discern who is influencing your thoughts (Matthew 16: 13-23). For you to walk in victory, you have to first of all win the battle in your mind.
