BET’s Music Matters artist Emeli Sandé won big last night at the Brit Awards. The Scottish singer/songwriter scored in two out of the four categories she was nominated for. She took home awards for Best British Female Artist and the biggest honor of the night, Best British Album, for her debut record Our Version of Events. The album was the UK’s most popular in 2012, selling 1.4 million copies.
Sandé didn’t just burst onto the music scene; she’s had a steady rise songwriting for Rihanna and Leona Lewis along with a host of others. She gained prominence in Europe as an artist in her own right before taking her act across seas to the U.S. last year.
Oozing with emotion upon her big win, Sandé humbly broke into her acceptance speech. "Wow. I think I'm a very unlikely pop star," she remarked. "This is an album I wrote because I didn't have the confidence to sing these things in person.”
Sandé closed the show singing her hits "Clown" and "Next to Me." The 25-year-old stole the night receiving a standing ovation for her performance.

Frank Ocean also picked up an award for Best International Male Solo at the ceremony. Ocean spoke on being honored: "Before this year I didn't get many trophies in my life, and I'm definitely a long way from working fast food in New Orleans, so thank you for this!"
