Message of the Week: Sexuality & the mind, Sam Adeyemi

Matthew 5 : 27-30   The way our brains and minds function is very critical to our sexuality. Our brain is the hardware but the information that flows into it is the software that determines how our brains operate, controlling our behaviour and ultimately influencing our character. There are two dimensions to our sexuality – the internal and the external; the internal controls the external.  Jesus redefined adultery beyond the physical act, He said if you as much as look at a person lustfully, you are guilty of adultery, because if you think long enough on a thing, it will very soon materialize in the physical. The mind, therefore, is the most important sex organ. There are two spiritual sources of information that influence our lives - God and satan. We have to be conscious of the information that we allow form our view towards sex. God and the devil are contending for our minds, but it's up to us ultimately to decide who gains control; whoever we align with will be the one influencing our values, perspectives and behaviour, and whose power will work in our lives. So, when we read novels, watch movies, etc, we have to be spiritual enough to discern the ideological foundation of the information we are getting. Many people walk through life ignorantly, especially Christians, and then wonder why their Christian lives are not effective. We have got to be sensitive enough to spot what satan is selling us about sex that is outside the boundaries of what God has provided because it is a deception. If we don't program our minds with knowledge that comes from God, satan will manipulate us until we malfunction. Our minds are under massive attack from the enemy - provocative sexual images and blatant immorality used to promote commerce. Discipline is the key, without which we will be like a city without walls. There's no true freedom without boundaries, without self-discipline we are easy prey for the enemy, our lives become open to the free reign of demonic spirits; Proverbs 25 ; 28. Pornography has exploded in our generation; sadly, most of those who watch pornography are less than twenty four years old, showing that the devil is after the younger generation before they even start out. Pornography has a strong effect on the male mind which is visually stimulated, and pornography is addictive. Getting hooked on pornography makes one lose control of his spiritual and mental space. With pornography come increased cases of rape, incest, masturbation, prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases, lack of fulfilment in marriage, broken homes, ruined careers and educational pursuits, increase in abortion, immature men obsessed with free sex without responsibility. If a man develops the capacity to arouse himself to the point of maximum enjoyment it hampers his ability to relate with others sexually. Brethren, let us accept that we are sexual beings and should strive to manage our sexuality with the help of the Holy Spirit. It's our reasonable service achieved by the renewing of our minds. We can take drastic action, if need be, to curb sexual appetites that are spiralling out of control; like the Christians in Ephesus we can burn all pornographic materials if we have any. Program the word of God in your hearts because your life can't change unless your thinking changes – cast down imaginations, murder evil thoughts with the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. It's achievable because we are victorious in Christ Jesus!
