Shannen Doherty -- Dancing with Debt

Shannen Doherty may have tried two-stepping the California taxman, TMZ has learned.

On March 22 just days before Shannen was booted from "Dancing with the Stars," the State of California slapped a $44,064.58 tax lien on the "90210" star.

So far, no comment from her people -- but we're guessing a few more "DWTS" paychecks would have really helped.

UPDATE: Shannen's peeps tell us this was the first she'd heard about the lien and that it would "be taken care of promptly."

Lagos Black Heritage Festival: Re-connecting the Diaspora with their roots

EIGHT years after it was rested, the Lagos Black Heritage Festival (LBHF), hosted to tell the story of the slave trade in Africa, is back. If the execution of the last Eyo Festival is any clue, then residents and visitors to the LBHF should look forward to a great time out.

Billed for 3-9 April, this year's edition (tagged festival of RECONNECTION, REVALUATION, REVINDICATION) will feature wide-ranging activities in both Central Lagos and Badagry, including a Boat Regatta, a Fitila and Fante Carnival Procession, multiple film screenings on slavery, Zangbeto, Egungun and Coconut festivals, drama, dance and arts/crafts exhibition, to mention but few.

“According to the facts on the ground, the opening ceremony will take place on the Island, while the closing ceremony is to be at Badagry,” says Prince Doheto Mesi, member Local Organising Committee (Badagry Division), in a chat with us.

Ahead of the flag-off Badagry is undergoing a thorough clean up and a couple of facilities upgrade. “Already, all community leaders have been sensitised to keep their environment clean and be prepared,” adds Mesi.

Early in January festival consultant Prof. Wole Soyinka led a team of LOC members to the palace of the Akran of Badagry His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi 1to discuss the event and take feedback from locals and stakeholders alike.

The festival, according to Soyinka, was “inspired by the spirit of convergence for which Lagos remains pre-eminent. It is a seven-day cultural manifestation during which hundreds of performers will animate the ancient city of Badagry and cosmopolitan Lagos in a blend of the traditional and the modern, welcoming thousands of visitors...”

It's been said that Badagry was the second largest slave port in West Africa; and a TIME publication on the subject says that “nearly half of the slaves taken to North America came from Nigeria and Angola”. The obvious implication of this is that all known slave harbours in Nigeria stand to gain a lot (in terms of tourist influx and tourist dollars) if the existing 'Slave Route project' is taken seriously as has been done in Neighbouring Ghana.

A significant highlight of the festival involves a traditional naming ceremony during which visiting African-Americans and their Caribbean counterparts are given indigenous names, which effectively roots them in Badagry. The new Nigerians are then encouraged to, among other things, consider buying up plots of land in the neighbourhood to build their own houses to which they can always return.

Taye Diggs: Biography

image: Taye Diggs
Taye Diggs was born Scott Digs on January 2nd, 1972 in New Jersey. His family moved to upstate New York when he was a young child. Taye had four younger siblings, two brothers and two sisters. Currently, his two brothers are musicians, one sister is a dancer and the other is going to college to be a veterinarian. Growing up, his friends called him Scottaye, which was later shortened to Taye. Taye was originally very indecisive about his career, wanting to be an inventor, pediatrician, psychologist, sing opera, and be an actor. He went to Syracuse University receiving a BFA in musical theater. While performing in a showcase during his senior year of college, Taye was spotted by talent agent and landed his first professional job in a cast revival of musical "Carousel."
For a brief period here, he worked at Disneyland in Tokyo. Taye then went on to star in Jonathon Larson's RENT as the yuppy scum landlord, Benjamin Coffin III. While with RENT, Taye received many TV roles a 1996 episode of Fox's "New York Undercover" and a recurring part as a slick music producer on the CBS daytime drama "Guiding Light". He received his first big screen role as Winston in "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" after a very successful screen test. He was nominated for Black Film Award in 1999 as Best Actor for his work and then appeared "Go" and "The Best Man." In 2001, he appeared as attorney Jackson Duper in several episodes of "Ally McBeal," which also starred his RENT costar Jesse L. Martin. For these he won a Nominated for NAACP Image Award in 2002 as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ally McBeal. In 2002, Taye played Clerick Brandt in the sci-fi thriller "Equilibrium" and "Just a Kiss," which his, at that time fiance, Idina Menzel also appeared in. Taye returned to musical theater as The Band Leader in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Chicago." In 2004 he returned to television, playing the title character in "Kevin Hill," which Idina also appeared in. He received $80,000 per episode. He returned to the role of Benny for the 2005 RENT movie. He says he was original freaked out about working with Idina, but had an amazing time in the end. He preformed in a RENT 10th Anniversary benefit on 4/24/2006 in which the entire original cast came back for one special performance.
Taye has been married to his long time girlfriend Idina Menzel since January 11, 2003. They have appeared together onstage in RENT, The Wild Party, and Wicked and he appears in her "Minuet" music video. They currently reside in New York. Taye and Idina want kids eventually, but are at this time focusing on their careers. He is also working on a new ABC TV series, the name of which has not yet been disclosed.

Chris Brown Having Trouble Locking Venue for 21st B-day

It's been over a year since Chris Brown's assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna, but the R&B singer is still struggling with a tarnished image.

According to the reports, Brown is having a hard time locking down a venue to accommodate his upcoming 21st birthday party, because club promoters are wary of angering princess Ri-Ri. "They don't want to mess up their relationship, or potential relationship," with a Rihanna, a source told the New York Post. Brown has reportedly sought out clubs in New York, Miami and Las Vegas to host his coming-of-age bash, but has been denied at all venues. Insiders say that he is currently investigating the use of restaurants and private residences in New York City.

Brown was ordered to serve five years of probation and complete community service following the assault, but his image has not been able to bounce back entirely. Early in March, a message that was allegedly recorded by Brown appeared on the website, SayNow.com. In the 90-sec clip, Brown begged fans for their assistance in his fight to get more airplay. "There's nothing else that I can do," the message said, "I'm doing everything that I need to do. I'm doing me as a person and I'm a better guy. But it's on ya'll."

Brown released his most recent album, 'Graffiti,' in December. Although it peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's R&B and Hip-Hop album chart, the album's singles received considerably less airplay than his previous songs.

Kelis divorced Hiphop Legend Nasir ‘Nas’ Jones and has been seeing Wale Ogunleye for two months now. Wale Ogunleye is a NFL star who was in a relationship with actress Sanaa Lathan which lasted four years. Ogunleye is of Nigerian background, and his grandfather was king of the city Emure, Ekiti State.
On March 11, 2008 Ogunleye, along with several other NFL players – Amobi Okoye, Ahman Green, Osi Umenyiora, Tommie Harris, and Israel Idonije returned to Nigeria to provide relief and aid to many towns. They helped provide clean water, HIV test kits, and set up clean water wells.
According to reports, Ogunleye and Kelis went to a Miami movie theater together and were spotted at Winter Conference. Ogunleye was also present when Kelis performed songs off her new record at Belvedere Music Lounge, US.
They were also seen kissing and making out at the VIP section of a club.
We hope Wale wouldn’t be the next one paying $50,000 monthly for the next 18 years like Nas is doing.

Live at American Idol: Was That Ryan and Simon Fight for Real?

Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell Zuma Press
First these two were bickering frenemies, then behind-the-scenes besties...but tonight, Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell were back at it again on the American Idol stage.
So what's the real deal?
We had a front-row seat for all the action, including the spat and its aftermath. Here's what really went down:
Simon and Ryan are indeed good pals. Cross our hearts, it's the whole truth and nothing but.
During their brief on-air tiff about the judges giving mixed messages to the Idol contestants, the two traded barbs once again for the cameras.
But then Ryan walked right up to Simon to settle the whole thing. Apparently, the audience was just too loud and our E! pal couldn't hear the Brit-wit Simon was dishing out. Thus, miscommunication ensued.
Face it, folks, these two are pals, amigos, compadres, and no matter what you see on your TV screens, there are always tons of hugs behind the scenes.
Some other fun notes:
• Simon's ex, Terri Seymour, arrived just after the first commercial break with Ellen DeGeneres' wifey, Portia de Rossi. Hmmm, isn't he kinda engaged?! (We kid! These two have remained close pals.)
• Ellen and Simon locked eyes with Katie Stevens, who was the first of the bottom three saved. Ellen raised her eyebrows in shock, and Simon rolled his eyes.
• That contestants corner would be a total dullsville without the fun times had by buddies Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche. Those two danced the night away during each of tonight's performances—including Diddy's. After the rap icon rocked the show, Andrew and Mike ran over to meet him, then returned to their bench and squealed like bubbly little schoolgirls (or very enthusiastic grown-ups, anyway).
Casey James, Crystal Bowersox, Shioban Magnus and Lee Dewyze didn't even try to hide their shock and sadness over Didi Benami's elimination.
Are you buying what Ryan and Simon are selling onscreen, or are you on board with the besties theory? Did Didi deserve to go home? Let us know in the comments below.
