The World Economic Forum has honoured Journalist-Broadcaster Funmi Iyanda as Young Global Leader in 2011. The event took place at Cape Town, South Africa from Friday, March 4, 2011 to Sunday, March 6, 2011.
The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
Each year, the forum acknowledges close to 200 individuals who are under the age of 40 for 'professional accomplishments, commitment to society and potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world'. This year's 190 awardees were chosen from over 5000 prospects in 65 countries.
Iyanda was not the only Nigerian to be recognized by the international body, as Group Managing Director of Hygeia Group, Folashade Laoye was also honoured.
By receiving this award, both women now join the ranks of popular personalities such as TV show host Oprah Winfrey and Facebook owner Mark Zukerberg who are beneficiaries of the same award.
