Just in time for holiday gifts!

Fans will be able to get their hands on Heat Rush in February. TIDBIT: According to MTV.com, Beyonce’s upcoming I AM…World Tour DVD will hit shelves on November 30th.
2-Shotz
Two man-group Foremen was 2-Shotz formal introduction to Nigerian hip-hop but it wasn’t until the emcee teamed up with eLDee and his posse – da Trybe that the public began to take notice of the rapper from Abia state. Sadly though, the first house eLDee built in the late 90’s would crumble at the turn of the new millennium and 2-Shotz would have to wait another four years before his solo album Pirated Copy would see the light of day.
Fast forward to today, and rapper/entrepreneur – 2-Shotz has spent more than ten years in (or around) the spotlight, steadily grinding out a full-length album for his fans every 18 months or so. That way, even though the Ummunnamu Record’s CEO isn’t exactly the headliner hip-hop observers once though he’d become, his name can still be found somewhere in the story, if you look closely.
So just how does the diminutive emcee manage to remain relevant in a music genre plagued with chronic amnesia? You see, 2-Shotz is something of a hip-hop chameleon, adapting his music to suit whatever is prevalent on radio at the time. It’s almost as if 2-Shotz sits back, scouts for artistes that are on the verge of being successful, coerces them into some sort of collaboration for his album’s lead singles and partakes in the soon-to-be A-lister’s popularity by association. This has happened one too many times to be passed off as coincidence.
However, not everybody is thrilled with 2-Shotz’ radio success formula. Truth be told, the hip-hop nation eschews his watered-down, overly simplistic style of music but 2-Shotz couldn’t care less even if he tried. In the man’s own words, ‘you no fit sell hardcore for this country, man!’ 2-Shotz is a business man first and a musician later, much later.
2-shotz - the veteran, the visionary!!

10 Years of Holy Mallam
Holy Mallam is a pioneer in his own brand of comedy, "Gospel Comedy". He started this genre of comedy over 10 years ago when efforts to break through into the comedy industry proved futile, much less with his unique approach.
He is widely regarded as a titan in his own genre because he rose through the ranks and has built his reputation to become Nigeria's most celebrated Gospel Comedian.
Holy Laughter started out as an annual event put together and hosted by Holymallam. An evening of gospel comedy, music and dance. The maiden edition held in April 2005 holds the record of selling out the Prestigious Shell Hall of the Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos to two show simultaneously. The show has featured the best of Nigerian Comedians and Music talents in the gospel genre.
Bench Warmer, 7 track musicomedy album released in 2005 andlaunched in 2008, is still enjoying reviews and massive air play on radio and television till date signifing the revelance of the message. Making the most of his comedy talent on his "Devil tinye aka na barbu wire" track (translates: The Devil hand caught in barbed wire), he commented on the bad driving habits in Nigeria. Today the track is being used as a theme song by the Lagos State Traffic Managament Authourity (LASTMA) in warning road users from breaking the law.
Let’s Jazz Up The City!
‘Lagos is a wonderful city, full of life and energy. But it can get a bit frantic. So we conceived of The Lagos Jazz Series to cool things down’ says founder Oti Bazunu. The first ever Lagos jazz series will hold from November 5-7, 2010 across three primary stages in Africa’s most populous city. Over three days, renowned Jazz artistes from the Americas, Europe and Africa will deliver exciting performances from for select audiences in the most important event for lovers of fine music and the good life.
‘We’re inviting some of our favourite Jazz musicians from all over the world to come and play for us in intimate and exciting venues. Since they’re coming, we might as well put on a bit of a show and invite all of you, our favourite people, to attend. The Lagos State government has kindly offered us the beautiful Muri Okunola Park. Our friends at the Sofitel Moorehouse are hosting the musicians and the opening event. The Federal Palace Hotel has opened their lush waterside grounds to us and the German Consulate is hosting a jazz breakfast. Noble Hill is providing great wines and Lufthansa is flying in the artists. The show is coming together and it’s going to be wonderful’.
Some of the artists we’re excited about seeing perform include:
American pianist, composer and band leader Randy Weston: It’s hard to think of another jazz musician who has promoted the African roots of jazz with quite the missionary zeal of pianist Randy Weston. Encompassing the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa, Weston has been said to have “the biggest sound of any jazz pianist since Ellington and Monk, as well as the richest most inventive beat.”
Morrie Louden, a California native, lit up radio, hogged the jazz charts and attracted high praise from jazz legends with the release of his album Time Piece in spring 2007. Louden stunned listeners with his technical virtuosity, melodic improvisations, and composition skills, with tunes encompassing burning post-bop, sensitive ballads, and bossa novas.
Simone, daughter of legendary icon Nina Simone, is a dynamic and charismatic vocalist, songwriter, and performer whose ability to transcend genres honors the remarkable legacy of her mother. Blessed with a rich vocal range and an innate gift for lyrical interpretation, Simone’s resume includes starring roles on Broadway in such acclaimed musicals as “Rent” and “Aida”
Somi: Born in America, the Rwandan-Ugandan singer Somi has been described as glistening with the sheen of an almost impossibly perfect cosmopolitanism.” Singing in English and three East African languages, Somi’s vocal delivery is subtle yet the power she exerts is enormous. Often compared to the likes of Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn and Cassandra Wilson, Somi is a performer to behold.
Mike Aremu is one of Nigeria’s biggest saxophonists, who has been able to create a sound that represents both his creative passion and the deep elements of his culture. He has made a fan out of everyone who has seen him perform, living up to his billing as a world class performer.
Ayetoro is an internationally acclaimed 12-piece Jazz band led by one of Nigeria’s most talented composers and pianists Funsho Ogundipe. The collective’s members are all established musicians in Lagos, Accra and London, with a rhythmic fluidity that bridges the gap between Afrobeat and Jazz with reflections on the past and present of both genres.

CHARLY BOY KISSING DENRELE
They were photo’d kissin (as seen above). Charly Boy says: Sexual preference is an individual’s prerogative. I have created perceptions in the different moods and mazes; to me what’s important is what the brand stands for.

P-Square speaks on SMVA 2010
The history of the Nigerian music industry will not be completed without the chapter of the group p-square. If achievements are one of the yard sticks to measure the success of artistes, P-square will remain number one on the chart of all research groups. They have defiled the odds, weathered the storm and re-written the history of the Nigerian music industry; they have also proven that there are always differences between artistes and musicians. Arguable, p-square remain the most popular Nigerian artiste all around the globe. It is generally concluded that this set of twins PAUL & PETER OKOYE remains one of the greatest symbol of Nigerian entertainment industry alongside legendary Afro beat icon Fela.
P- Square the dynamic duo who have been nominated in 4 various categories which are Best Editing, Best Duo or Group Video, Best Video and Best western because of their hit song Danger speak about SMVA.
SMVA is making meaningful impact in the entertainment industry as it’s the only 24hr dedicated music channel, which gives them leverage and authority to host a video award says the Duo.
It’s a good feeling and rewarding feeling to be nominated Pan African in these 4 categories but it came as no surprise to us because of the quality, value and time put into every song, video or album as we consistently strive to bring out quality videos, concepts and ideas and people are glad watching it because we don’t do half measures. Although the credits goes to the director as he is the brain child behind the videos.
SMVA 2010 has incorporated a PAN African approach and this is a laudable feat and gives us a good challenge because we always give the best videos in Africa and without bragging as we have the best concept, quality, originality and videos that can be compared to our foreign counterparts.
Speaking about Danger, an album which has been nominated for various awards, Paul explained the technicality and the procedure used to shoot the video, which he explained as tasking, rigorous and very challenging, the video which was shot in slow motion for every scene and required everyone taking panadol after every 2hrs. With this hard work, it leaves no doubt that Danger was made for SMVA awards because of the technicality.
The criteria for the selection of nominees and winners of the SMVA’s are very technical as it is based on the creative interpretation and value employed in the expression of talent. The dynamic duo believe that they have what it takes to clinch awards because of the time, efforts and creative interpretation of their videos. The Nigerian artiste also know the value of work that their peers put into their videos and as such for a lot of categories the winners are almost known by the stake holders and that is the quality of video’s that P-square does.
SMVA 2010 which will be taking place on the 20th of November at the new Expo Center, Eko hotel will be a breath taking event, as the dynamic duo who haven’t attended an award ceremony in the last 2years have pledged their support and attendance to SMVA as it is the only award ceremony who has the platform to host a music video award because of its 24 hour musical station
2010 MOBO Awards. The Winners Are…
London grime MC and rapper Tinie Tempah showed himself to be a worthy successor to the current king of UK urban Dizzee Rascal as he was named best newcomer, after a year that has seen him move seamlessly from the grittier edges of the underground scene to the mainstream.
The 21-year-old, whose real name is Patrick Okogwu, also took home the award for best video for Frisky featuring Labrinth, although he missed out on best song and best UK act.
Accepting the award, Tempah said he had been at the event last year as a spectator. “It’s nice to be nominated and its nice to finally win something,” he mumbled into the mic.
At the Echo Arena, Strictly Come Dancing’s Alesha Dixon hosted the music of black origin awards alongside Radio 1 chart show presenter Reggie Yates.
Boyband JLS took home two awards for best UK act and best album.
Best song went to N-Dubz’s Playing with Fire featuring Mr Hudson while best UK hip hop/grime act went to Hackney-born Professor Green, aka Stephen Paul Manderson.
East London continued to punch above its weight as Forest Gate’s Ben Drew, better-known as Plan B, was awarded best Best UK R&B/Soul Act after seeing his critically lauded second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks go straight into the UK album chart at number one earlier this year.
Best international artist went to Eminem, whose seventh studio album Recovery stayed at number one on the US chart for five consecutive weeks, also achieving the top spot in the UK.
Before the awards, ticket holders streamed up to the gates of the Echo Arena. Michelle Dalrymple, a local government worker from the city was there with her eight-strong clan. “We’re black, we’re Scouse and we’re proud,” she said in glittering golden heels. “Liverpool has a brilliant up-and-coming music scene and this is a boost to urban music in the city.”
The crowd continued their raucous form inside the arena, jumping, singing and screaming through performances from Tinchy Stryder, who was joined on stage by the evening’s golden boy Tinie Tempah, as well as Professor Green, Devlin and American rapper Nelly.
Dixon also made a quick role change from presenter to performer, bounding around the stage in spiky shoulder pads and scorching pants. She was a brief reminder of the female dimension of the UK urban music scene, with each of the 14 awards throughout the evening given to men.
As the event came to a close, its founder Kanya King took a moment to bask in the adulation of both acts and audience. “If someone had told me 15 years ago that the Mobo awards would have grown to this scale I don’t think I’d have believed them,” she said. “But over those years we’ve had some of the biggest acts on our stage and we’ve championed young artists and watched them grow to international super stars … and of course we’ve partied like there was no tomorrow.”
She wasn’t above a little light gloating. “Now here we are 15 years later and urban music is the new pop music and I hate to say this, but we told you so.”
Despite criticism about the event being held outside London for the first time last year, organisers this year decided to hold the event in Liverpool.
That is thanks, in no small part, to an 18-year-old from the Toxteth area of the city. Ben Osu and his friend Denise Janiece watched the event in Glasgow on television, and decided it would be the perfect means to boost the profile of urban music in a city better known for its rock bands.

ASA’s Beautiful Imperfection Reached No.1 on iTunes France Album Chart
Two years ago, her self titled album earned her one of the best awards in France “prix constantin”. Obvious the French taken with Beautiful Imperfection. Asa’s beautiful imperfection is currently at number 5 on iTunes France album chart behind Shakira’s sale el sol and at number 10 on Belgium album chart.
Asa, who earlier appeared and performed on the popular French music TV show “taratata” on France 2 Is on the verge of bridging the gap between west African style of music and pop.
Darey’s Back With New Singles Following Suspension Of US Album Over Death Of Record Label Chairman.
Reports were Darey would be relesing a US album with a source who was part of the production team informing his desire to work with Keri Hilson on the album. The US album would not materialise as it has been suspended by the singer following the death of label Chairman Dick Griffey. Following the demise, Darey has been working with producer Cobhams Asuquo on his third yet-to-be-titled album.
Two Singles from the album would be realised on radio next week. Like with the Un-dareyted album, The first single is a ballad, while the other is more upbeat that would earn rotation in the clubs and dance halls.
‘Don’t let me know’ and ‘The way you are’ suggest this is the direction of the new album.
Darey’s Publicist informs: On ‘The way you are’, Darey advises the ladies to love who they are because “You’re a born star!” he says. With fun ad libs and a refrain that sticks from your first listen, the song’s message is simple: what matters most is who you are – not the fancy clothes you wear, kind of car your drive, or what people say. So why not learn to embrace who you are? (while) ‘The way you are’ will make you bump, nod and dance while provoking deep thoughts that stay with you long after you’ve pressed the stop button.
Don’t let me know is an ode to a lover who he can’t be with due to circumstances. It’s the story of a man in love who still sits around, thinking about the love that once was; wondering what the other person is doing in their new found relationship. They love each other but yet circumstances keep them apart. He is asking a-thousand-and-one questions, yet wanting no answers. ‘Does he make you smile; giggle like a child? Does he keep you warm? Is he weak or is he strong? Where did we go wrong?’ Darey’s voice as usual is soaked in powerful emotions; insisting all the while, that he wants no answers. Don’t let me know is the song for those who truly believe in the power of love. Just like with ‘Not the girl’, Darey says he hopes Don’t let me know ‘will help us all look within and trust that true love will always overcome’
Both songs were written by Darey and Cobhams Asuquo and recorded at Soul Muzik studios (SMS) in Abuja, Nigeria.

There were reports the two sides were negotiating an out-of-court deal. Seems the deal didn't work.

Skuki and KISS Media Separation – What Went Wrong?
Skuki severing ties with erstwhile managers KISS Event Media, the duo’s record label – Daphella Entertainment has come out to clear the air. According to Daphella, the separation was based on mutual agreement between the two parties, and is effective from October 20, 2010.
According to a statement made available to Our Sources Skuki signed a 2-year management contract with the Howie-T-led KISS on September 1, 2009 and the contract was due to expire on August 31, 2011. As part of the agreement, KISS was to manage the artistes’ publicity, promotion and marketing as concerns their debut album B.A.N.G.E.R – including outdoor performances.
However, the label alleged that KISS lacked the commitment to actualize these goals; causing the album to flop commercially.‘When Skuki’s album was packaged and finalised before the release in May, 2010, KISS hailed the songs and adjudged them. I quote ‘solid and very commercial’, insists Daphella Entertainment boss Daniel Attiogbe. ‘They went ahead to give the label the assurance of the album’s success. The album was not well circulated and hence didn’t get to its deserved height’, he opines.
However, Daphella assured us that plans are in motion to relaunch Skuki’s debut album, and revealed that the new marketing strategy would make the album available on ‘Skuki’s fans doorsteps’. ‘We want to make it clear that all is fine between Daphella Entertainment, Skuki and KISS Event Media. This was just a contract issue that naturally will never last forever’, Daniel reassured.

Munya Gets More Cash Than Big Brother Winner, Uti.
The 24 year old Munya, who survived a record 9 times eviction in the Big Brother All Stars came second to the disappointment of many who had already declared him a winner.
After fighting off stiff competition from Zimbabwe’s Munya, Nigeria’s Uti was announced the winner of Big Brother all star prize money of US$ 200 000.
The 27 year old Nigerian beat Munya when he won with 8 country votes against Munya’s 7 votes in a closely fought finale in South Africa.
Mr David Chapfika, who heads the consortium said although the Son of the Soil as he was also known came second, he won the most hearts and minds of millions of Africans judging by the number of evictions he survived every week.

My First Kiss Was With Friend’s Dad - Nkiru Sylvanus
Nkiruka Sylvanus is an actress that has made her mark in Nollywood. She started at a very tender age and has succeeded in working her way to the top. The Enugu State University graduate of Mass Communications recently spoke with Adunola Fasuyi on her musical and acting careers as well as her love life. Excerpts:
Would you say your acting career was by accident or design?
I chose the career because I discovered I have the talent and love for it and I didn’t allow anything else to take that passion from me by starting very early, at least in my teenage years. I started very early and today, I have no regrets because it’s something I have a passion for, not just for the money or fame, but also for the love I have for doing it. It gives me joy.
Can you lead us into your background?
Well, I have a Christian background, though, not what I would call wealthy or rich, but it was fun growing up. We had our ups and downs, which is expected of an average family, but my parents are the best.
They tried in their little ways to make sure we had the best of what they could afford and I respect them for that till date. Our family was and is still that one-happy-family.
You are from a Christian home, so what was your parents’ reaction to your acting career?
I had their support all the way. Their interest was that, I don’t lose focus on my religious beliefs, my education must not be compromised and to keep being a good girl with morals. Once I don’t lose track of these, I have their blessings.
Which part of the country did you grow up?
I grew up in Aba, Abia State. Most of my developmental years were spent in the east, maybe that’s why I enjoy staying there.
When did you come to Lagos and what were the circumstances that led to your relocation?
I did not relocate to Lagos, I’m still in Enugu, but temporarily, I am in Abuja for now working. As a Face of Hope, I am expected to be up and doing with some line of activities towards sustaining the mission and vision of the project. I go to where the job demands.
You must have had your disappointments as a movie star, what are they?
I don’t believe in disappointments. I believe that anything you can’t have was never meant for you. So, when others record disappointments, I record achievement to another level.
What has changed in your lifestyle since you hit movie limelight?
Nothing really changed in my lifestyle, considering the fact that I grew up with stardom. I became a star before I could even understand life itself. So, for me, it’s all about living each day as it comes, trying to do what is right, showing love to my fellow humans and being myself.
How would you compare your life when you first started acting and now?
A lot has changed, starting from tender age till now that I am an adult. I am older now, compared to then when I began as a teenager. I have also grown in experience and wisdom as well as achievements. My coat is so enlarged now that when I look back and see what God has done in my life, I cannot but continue to serve Him till the rest of my life.
Counting one, two, three, where would you place yourself in the cadre of actresses?
I am an actress that is trying and working hard to be the best in my chosen career. I am not in any competition with anybody, so I can’t talk about rating. All I can say is that I see myself as good with what I do and with the favour of God, which I believe I have, I am contented.
What’s your take on Nollywood generally?
Nollywood is a fast growing industry, and we will get there. With the necessary support from all, we will surely get there. It’s only a matter of time.
How much would you be asking for to act nude?
I don’t think I would ever want to act nude in any movie, here or abroad. It’s absurd. Please don’t ask me such questions, I can’t even imagine it.
What are the qualities you think won you ‘Face of Hope’?
Winning Face Of Hope for me was God’s favour and love shown to me by my fans and family.
Out of those things written about you, which ones really are not true, and which ones hit you on the wrong side?
Sometimes those things people write about me are subjective and not objective but I have made it a duty to ignore whatever anybody writes or fabricates about me because I see it as one of the prices to pay as a celebrity
How do you handle such scandalous stories?
There are no extra efforts from me towards staying away from scandals. I am only taking extra efforts towards living right and trying as much as I can to be a good example to those following me and looking up to me. Notwithstanding, that does not eliminate shortcomings, because I am just human.
Would you ever consider marrying a celebrity like you?
Love and understanding is all that matters in any relationship, so for me, it does not matter where I find my husband. What matters is what exits between us.
Are you in any relationship at the moment?
There are some matters that are considered private and it’s always good to leave it as private as it is.
When are you getting married?
I will be getting married as soon as I have found my husband.
So, you have not found a husband yet?
Journalists, you ask too many questions.
Who are your friends in the movie industry; who would you not rather associate with and why?
All my colleagues are my friends, no exceptions. And I relate with them accordingly.
Which is your most challenging work (s)?
Every job I do is challenging because for every job, it’s a new me. My fans see a new Nkiru in every job I do.
Who is your first love?
My first love is God, then my family.
Can you share your experience on your first kiss with us?
My first kiss was disgusting. I hated the experience. I was in Junior Secondary School then. I had this friend that we used to attend church services together.
One evening, I went to her house to call her so we could go together as we used to do. But on that day, I met her dad at home who asked me to wait for his daughter.
While waiting, he held me and kissed me. I screamed such that he got scared and opened the door for me and I ran home crying and spitting. I refused to eat all day. I was brushing my mouth over and over till my dad came home and I reported the case to him. It separated the two families, and that was how I lost my first childhood best friend.
What would you personally consider your major achievements in life?
I have not gotten there yet. I am still working and I know with God on my side, I will always fly like an eagle.
Aside acting, what other talents do you possess?
I’m a multi-talented person. Not many people know that I can sing, write poems and I also have the talent for designing clothes and hair styling. These, among others, are things I have flair for.
What are your regrets in life?
Regrets? I don’t think I have any. Everything that has happened to me under this heaven has been destined to happen, so I don’t have any regret over them.
What would you have become if you have not been an actress?
I would have been a doctor or probably a nurse.
What would you not be caught doing?
Anything that I can’t do publicly, I can’t be caught doing it privately. I would never be caught smoking because I don’t smoke.
What if you take up a role that requires you to smoke?
In that case, as a professional, I will only disguise with it, but I won’t smoke it. People watching the movie won’t even know I didn’t smoke the cigarette. I can never do it because I hate smoking with a passion.
How do you ward off advances from numerous admirers?
Being admired is a desirable thing, and I appreciate admiration from my fans, and it keeps me going on. I am also filled with joy that I have people who admire what I do and who I am.
Who is Nkiru when off the screen?
I am a humble person, patient, accommodating, fun loving, not really an extrovert but love plenty of attention.

Message of the Week: Better Life for Everybody
Sam Adeyemi
Abraham Maslow, a renowned psychologist, researched human needs, trying to understand how human beings are motivated. He found at the core of human motivation, needs. Human beings strive to satisfy these needs and derive fulfilment from them. Furthermore, Maslow discovered that not all needs are at the same level, so he structured human needs into five levels and developed the 'Maslow Hierarchy of Needs'.
The first level, which is the lowest level, is Physiological needs – the need for air, sleep, food and drink. These are survival needs and survival is the strongest instinct in man, so the needs on this level are the strongest in man. Safety and Security needs are on the second level. On the third level are Social needs, the need for love and affection. Level four needs are Esteem needs – respect, status, reputation – gotten through competence at a skill. Lastly, the fifth level needs are for Self Actualization, the need to express your uniqueness, make a meaning out of life by serving others. Maslow stressed that not till the lower level needs are met will the higher level needs be priority. For example, respect and self actualization are the last thing on a person's mind whose survival needs are not met.
Jesus had a different opinion; He upturned all that Maslow theorized. In Matthew 6:31-34, Jesus said we should seek first God's kingdom then we'll get all the fulfilment we crave. This is a reverse order from Maslow's theory. We belong to God's kingdom and the principles that drive it differ drastically from the world's system. When we seek God's kingdom – His system of doing things first, it helps us set our priorities in the right order. On a national scale, re-ordering our priorities to align with God's principles will re-structure our nation and engender development.

eLDee Exposes Facebook Impersonator
The impersonator, whose true identity is yet to be ascertained, opened a Facebook account in July and posted pictures of eLDee and his family, even going as far as updating his status regularly to keep his unsuspecting Facebook friends in the know of activities very similar to the real eLDee’s.
This episode further highlights the cons of social networking and some of the very unique challenges celebrities face in today’s world. eLDee rebuked his impersonator in very strong terms and has vowed to bring the individual to book.

Sade Says No To Collabos With Jay-Z & Other Rappers
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sade reveals that Jay–Z and other MCs have approached her about rapping over her beats or having her sing the hook on their records, but she has politely declined.
“I’m too scared,” she says. “They’ll find me out. It’s like ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ They’ll find out there’s nothing there. As for collaborations, I’m collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write.”
Sade and her band will kick off the North American leg of their 50-city tour on June 16, starting at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena.

The Police and I.. Naomi Lucas (1)
I have reached a very honest conclusion: There is something about me that attracts the Police. Maybe it’s the colour of my car-It’s yellow, it’s so yellow I’ve often been asked if I won it during an MTN promo, or maybe it’s me, I know say I no wowo, lol, or it could also be the way I look- gullible, yeah, until I open my mouth :). There’s a 99-1% chance that I’ll get stopped wherever there’s a congregation of hungry Policemen, check point I meant to say. Below are my favourite checkpoint stories.
I was driving along the popular Suya-Spot road when I was flagged down by a Policeman flashing the beam of a torchlight in my face in the hot afternoon sun. ‘Park’ he yelled, standing legs at ease right in the middle of the road. For a fleeting second I was tempted to hit him, just a little, enough to dislocate something; but then I remembered the awful smell of Surulere Police Station, and decided to respect myself and park. He motioned for me to wind down. I did.
Police: Hello fine sister (smiling to reveal tobacco stained teeth)
Me: Good afternoon Sir (Feigning boredom and slight irritation)
When Mr Police guy realised I wasn’t going to play along, he requested for my particulars. After studying my driver’s licence like it was a sheet of papyrus from the Vatican, he said, ‘Why you yellow for real life pass for the picture?’ I looked at him incredulously and said nothing. How do you answer a question like that? And then he snapped ‘Answer me! I’m talking to you, you are looking at me as if you be Kurma (deaf & dumb in Hausa language). Do you know who am I? It took a lot of control for me not to burst into delirious laughter. I was tempted to ask him ‘who you are?’ After ensuring I understood his importance in the equation called Nigeria, he let me go.
***
Again I got stopped by a lone Policeman further down the same road. I was on a short leash that day and was ready to blow up anything in my path. It takes a lot to catch me in a bad mood, but that day I was BAD itself (put that in font 46, Arial black, in bold, underlined and italicized, lol) seriously. ‘Park!’, he yelled, striking the same pose as his predecessor. I wondered if the pose was part of their training. I parked. He demanded for my particulars; I gave them to him. After flipping through in seconds, he returned them. ‘What’s in your boot?’ he asked. Nothing, I said. Open the boot let me see. It’s open, I replied, my seatbelt still securely fastened. ‘Come down and open it’ he ordered. For some funny reason, I ran out of patience and did a very stupid thing. I hissed and drove off.
I thought about my family and how they would receive the news of my death, about my Clients and how they would manage. I wondered what would be written on my tombstone. It occurred to me that I would die not knowing how much I had in my bank accounts and who I even penned down as next of kin. I pictured my kid sister grieving for six months and then wheeling my collection of jeans to the tailor down the street-to reduce the waist and hip size. I was pained I didn’t even have a chance to get married and be called mummy somebody. All these things I thought of within the fifty meters it took me to connect to Ikorodu road because I was sure the Policeman would kill me and label me a suspected armed robber, never mind that I was driving.
Just as I managed to squeeze into a lane, Bond himself appears without the blond, on a powerbike; Okada I mean. He got down, struck that same pose but this time with his gun pointed at me and screamed, ‘Park’! I smiled. I was already involuntarily parked, thanks to the bumper to fender traffic. I got down, angry, very angry. I yelled right back at a Policeman who had a gun pointed in my face. I’ll save you the drama. I’m alive to tell the story, so it means I sorted it. Till this day I wonder what I was thinking.
