Maslow's hierarchy of needs makes it obvious that most Nigerians are stuck with getting lowest level of needs met. Statistics from international organisations show that 70% of Nigerians live on less than a dollar a day which is the poverty level. The struggle for survival has adversely impacted adversely on virtually all spheres of our national life; civil service, education, police force to mention a few.
Man was never designed by God to be preoccupied with survival. He was designed for dominion and God's work for him was to manage God's resources and be a co-creator with Him. It is an abuse of human destiny, therefore, for a human being to struggle to get food to eat. The struggle for survival was the result of a curse ( Gen 3: 17-19). However, that's why Christ came and through Him we are delivered from the curse and we are free from the struggle for survival.
Jesus came to restore God's original mandate for man; seeking first the kingdom of God; God's plan and purpose is centered on leadership, which on Maslow 's Hierarchy of Needs, is self actualization. We were designed to focus on for level 5 but the devil wants us to concentrate on the survival needs. In the bid to meet the survival needs, we trade off the future. People who prosper the most are not people driven by mere survival. Our gifts and talents are given to contribute to making life better for the community and not for survival. To be remarkably successful we need to have dreams much bigger than our survival.
1 Tim 6: 6-8 says 'Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.'
Contentment can only be preached when the basic needs of food and clothing are met. Contentment is not the message to be preached to a hungry person. Contentment comes after the need for food and clothing is met. It's time our nation understood that God hates a system that permits hunger (Isa 58: 1-11). The basis of judgment on the last day will be whether we contributed to meeting people's basic needs or we neglected them (Matt 25: 31-46).
In conclusion; do not waste your life pursuing material things; give your life to God and join the community of true believers. As we strive to align with God's purpose, He will meet our needs. We will succeed!
